The band is led by Stephen Bradley who recently returned to the area after completing a Ph.D. at the University of Bath. He has extensive conducting experience mostly developed through his University career at the Universities of Leicester and Bath where he conducted Concert Bands, Big Bands and Brass Bands.

We aim to play a minimum of three concerts a year at Challney, and also to support other local events and charities in and around the Luton area.

We are self-supporting financially with members paying a small subscription each term. We play a wide range of music, some 'fun' pieces, music from films and shows, classical arrangements and, of course, marches. Click here for a look at a selection of the pieces we play

Challney Concert Band continues to provide local musicians, both young and old, with the opportunity to practise, perform and enjoy a wide variety of music. It also gives young musicians an opportunity to continue their music if they leave school at the age of 16.

The nucleus of the band is still ex-members of the Challney Schools' Band, which has long been prominent in the local music scene, but many musicians not connected with the Challney Schools have come to play with us. There are no auditions, what we ask is that players are enthusiastic and be able to play to a 'reasonable' standard - usually thought of as Grade 5 but having taken formal grades is not essential.

The Band was the proposal of the Principal of Challney Community College, Vic Galyer. He wanted a live music course as a FE offering to young musicians leaving school. He asked Bill Bell to be Band Manager, and Richard Guess to be Musical Director. Both of them had experience of these roles with the very successful Challney Schools Band for many years. By April 1991, the new Band was in the Prospectus of the College, and began to attract musicians, young and old. Richard Guess has worked with young brass players in Luton and South Beds for more years than he wants to admit to. He is currently involved with the Leighton Buzzard Salvation Army Band and Junior Band.
